Thomas R. Ward

Tom Ward believes that every person accused of a crime is entitled to a zealous and passionate defense.  Over the past decade, he has provided thousands of clients with aggressive, knowledgeable, results-oriented representation in all types of criminal cases.

Tom received his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1997, where he was the winner of the Rothgerber Moot Court Competition.  After law school, he served for four years as a Deputy State Public Defender in the Denver and Pueblo offices of the Colorado Public Defender system.  As a Public Defender, Tom litigated many serious and high-profile cases, honing his trial and negotiation skills and making a name for himself as a formidable courtroom opponent.

In 2001, Tom formed The Ward Law Firm, P.C. to serve the needs of people accused of crimes in the Denver metro area and beyond.  His practice presently emphasizes serious crimes such as homicide, sexual assault, and domestic violence.  He has also successfully defended clients in many complex prosecutions for charges such as mortgage fraud, computer crime, and large-scale drug conspiracies.   In addition to his busy practice in state courts for all of the Denver metro area counties, Tom handles numerous federal cases each year, and has served on the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the United States District Court in Denver since 2002.

Tom has lectured to hundreds of Colorado criminal defense attorneys on criminal defense law and procedure .  He maintains a robust pro bono practice, and in 2004 was awarded the Colorado Lawyers’ Committee’s Community Contribution Award for his work fighting to secure the release of a formerly mentally ill patient who had been warehoused at the Colorado Mental Health Institute for nearly two decades on a “not guilty by reason of insanity” commitment.

In April, 2009, Tom was recognized as one of Colorado’s top attorneys under the age of 40 when he was named to SuperLawyers magazine’s list of Colorado Rising Stars in the field of Criminal Defense.
